Interior Concrete Flat Work
Here are the steps Greystone follows to ensure the success of your project:
Basement Floors
- All basement floors are poured with 3500 PSI concrete.
- Super plasticizers are added to the concrete mix in the warmer months to make the concrete slump pourable. Super plasticizers are a better additive than water because they do not diminish the strength of the concrete mix. They also reduce shrinkage which in turn minimizes cracking.
- Zip strips-control joints-are always placed in locations where basement floors are likely to crack, particularly around posts or off corners. The zip strips help control cracking but they won't eliminate it entirely.
- Basement floors are hand troweled two to three times to ensure a level, Cleanable smooth finish.
Garage Floors
- All garage floors are poured with a 4000 PSI concrete mix containing fiber mesh and 6% air content (In fiber mesh, one itch long Polypropylene fibers are incorporated into every inch of the concrete for added strength and crack control.)
- Super plasticizers are added to the concrete mix in the warmer months to make the slump pourable. Super plasticizers are a better additive than water because they do not diminish the strength of the concrete mix. They also minimize cracking.
- Saw Cut control joints are used to allow for expansion/contraction due to climate changes.
Garage floors are sloped from back to front for drainage.
- The front lip of the garage pad is beveled to reduce the likelihood of water entering.
Floors are hand troweled two to three times to ensure a level, sweepable, smooth finish.
Concrete Care Tips
Keep these tips in mind to maximize the life of your new concrete project.
Sealing
- Your flat concrete project takes up to 30 days to cure. Sealing to protect the surface needs to take place 30 days after the concrete is placed.
- Minnesota's sever climate and our use of de-icing chemicals play havoc on concrete. Sealing the surface will minimize the damage.
- Make sure your new concrete is sealed before its first winter.
- Stick to the schedule of maintenance recommended for the sealer you choose and use. Call Cemstone Contractor Supply are 651-905-1500 for recommended sealing products.
Care & Maintenance
- Have you ever tried sandblasting your kitchen floors to remove a persistent stain or used bleach to touch up your carpet? Of course not! Use the same consideration when caring for the concrete surfaces outside your house.
- Keep concrete clean of ice and snow.
- Avoid using harsh acids for cleaning concrete. Should rust, oil or other materials stain your concrete surface, clean only with a product designed for use on concrete.
